Mental Health and Well Being
As part of South Pennine Academies, we’re proud to support a Trust‑wide approach to mental health and wellbeing for children, staff, and our wider community.
At Kirkheaton Primary School, we see children’s mental health and wellbeing as just as important as their physical health. We make this a priority throughout our curriculum and through the care and support we offer to pupils and their families.
Our commitment is reflected in our ongoing work across eight key priority areas:
• Leadership
• Staff Culture
• Student Culture
• Support for Staff
• Continuous Professional Development
• Support for Pupils
• Working with Parents/Carers
• Working with External Agencies
We are an inclusive school, and we work hard to make sure every child has access to the resources, support, and environments that help them develop strong emotional literacy. This section of our website is here to give you helpful information and guidance. If you ever need more support, please feel free to contact us at school. We’re always here to help.
School Mental Health Award
We are very proud of our on-going work to support positive Mental Health and Wellbeing and we will be assessed in October towards our School Mental Health Award through by Leeds Beckett University in recognition of the work we do to support the mental health and wellbeing of our staff, children and their families.
Menta Health First Aider
Our Qualified Mental Health first aider is our Senior Mental Health Lead- Miss Katie Field. The 2-day training course (through St John's Ambulance) Miss Field is equipped and knowledgeable in:
- Understanding the context of mental health across England.
- Identifying Risk Factors for mental ill health.
- Identifying protective factors for mental ill health.
- Promoting well being for all stakeholders in our Academy.
- Using the ALGEE model to provide mental health first aid and support for someone with mental ill health or in crisis.
- Signposting individuals to specialist support and agencies where they can access further information and help
Mental Health Advocated
In Key Stage 2, our Mental Health advocate is Mrs K Beaumont and in Key Stage 1 our Mental Health advocate is Mrs Crawshaw. They will complete their qualification this year through St John's Ambulance, preparing them to: role model healthy behaviours, start supportive conversations, and promote mental health and wellbeing across the organisation. Unlike Mental Health First Aiders who may focus on crisis response, Advocates help shape everyday culture, offering informal support, running wellbeing “toolbox talks”, and encouraging open dialogue.
By completing this course, delegates will:
- Understand how to support children, colleagues and create a more mentally healthy work environment
- Learn how to spot signs of poor mental health and signpost to appropriate support
- Be able to initiate meaningful, empathetic conversations
- Build confidence to raise awareness and reduce stigma in the workplace.
Our Mental Health and Well Being Governor
We are delighted to announce that Mrs Faith Thomas has recently taken on the role as our lead parent governor for Mental Health and Well Being. Faith will work along side our Mental Health team to check that we are on the right path in our journey, work alongside our Mental Health Support Buddies to collect pupil voice and organise exciting new events within our school linking to Mental Health and Well Being.
