Physical Education
Curriculum Overview
Intent
At Kirkheaton Primary School, our intent is to provide a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and physically demanding activities. We aim to foster a lifelong love of movement and healthy living, ensuring every child has access to a wide range of sporting opportunities. Through PE, we promote teamwork, resilience, respect, and responsibility—values that underpin our whole school ethos.
Implementation
Our PE curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progression of skills across all year groups. We deliver two hours of PE each week, combining indoor and outdoor activities. Children experience a broad range of sports, including athletics, gymnastics, dance, invasion games, and swimming. We work closely with local sports partnerships to provide specialist coaching and access to inter-school competitions. Extra-curricular clubs and enrichment days offer additional opportunities for pupils to explore new sports and develop confidence. Safety and inclusivity are at the heart of our approach, ensuring all children, including those with additional needs, can participate fully.
Impact
Through our PE provision, pupils develop physical competence, confidence, and enjoyment in physical activity. They learn the importance of health and fitness and understand how exercise contributes to overall wellbeing. Our children leave Kirkheaton with the skills and motivation to continue being active throughout their lives. They demonstrate resilience in challenges, respect for rules and others, and responsibility as team players and individuals. Success is measured through pupil engagement, skill progression, participation in competitive events, and positive attitudes towards physical activity.
