Safeguarding - specific issues for children at Kirkheaton Primary School
Contextual safeguarding at Kirkheaton Primary School
Our children are explicitly taught about keeping themselves safe and how to manage risks. There are specific units of teaching within the RSE/PSHE curriculum which help them to gain skills and knowledge.
From experience within our local context of the specific issues children in Kirkheaton school have faced and may face, we feel it is extremely important to teach our children about the risks from and how to deal with these risks for the following:
Healthy relationships and consent
Mental well-being
Keeping safe online
Domestic violence
Awareness of the dangers of grooming/CSE/county lines/coercive behaviour
Dangers of getting involved with anti-social behaviour
Our curriculum coverage ensures these elements of contextual safeguarding are explicitly taught. Our PSHE/RSE themes develop skills as well as knowledge so that the children leave our care being able to:
- Recognise the kinds of situations which put them in danger
- Know what to do to keep themselves safe
- Take responsibility for the safety of others
- Where to go if they are in danger
- What to do to stop themselves from getting into danger through coercive behaviour
