Welcome to the SEND team
Welcome to the Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) section of Kirkheaton Primary school’s website.
Our Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) is Miss Melody Conyers, she is responsible for the day to day running of the school’s Special Educational Needs department. She is happy to meet with any parent to discuss concerns they may have regarding their child’s special needs. She is ably supported by a well established SEN team, who have experience of a variety of needs including autism, dyslexia and challenging behaviour. We also work with gifted children, giving them opportunities to broaden their experience and to work at their own pace.
Most children with special needs are able to progress within their unit by receiving good teaching and additional intervention by the teacher, a support teacher or teaching assistants. However, there are occasions when this is not enough and our Inclusion Manager will become involved at the request of the Unit leader/class teacher. At this point parents will be fully involved in the action that might be taken to support their child. This may require involvement from other agencies such as Educational Psychologists or Speech and Language Therapists.
If you have any concerns about your child please come and discuss them with either Miss Conyers or Mrs Grist. We have an open door policy and would encourage you to talk to us as soon as possible.
Hopefully you will find the different pages on the SEND section of our website informative and useful. If you have any questions about SEND or your child's education, please feel free to speak to a member of staff.
